University of Utah Health Plans Individual Health Insurance Company Overview
University of Utah Health Plans (“UofU”) is the only university healthcare system in Utah. It's known for its provider network which includes the University of Utah and MountainStar facilities. We estimate it serves 8% of all Utahns who buy their own coverage. That's roughly 16,000 Utahns.
UofU offers many different types of plans. Some plans include low deductibles and copays. Other plans are high-deductible. These include “HSA-qualified” plans. HSA stands for health savings accounts. HSA-qualified plans allow policyholders to contribute to HSAs tax-free.
University of Utah Health Plans Provider Networks
UofU offers two networks: Healthy Premier and Healthy Preferred.
The Healthy Premier network covers the entire state of Utah. So, it includes more in-network providers.
The Healthy Preferred network offers a subset of the Healthy Premier network. Health Preferred only includes in-network providers in certain counties. These are Salt Lake, Davis, Box Elder, Cache, Weber, and Utah counties. If you live in one of these counties, you can choose the Healthy Preferred network. If not, you will only have the option to select the Healthy Premier network.
The Healthy Premier network is larger than the Healthy Preferred network. It covers more providers and geography. Thus, it costs more.
When you look at a UofU plan, be sure to note the network. A plan with the Healthy Premier network will cost more than the same plan with Healthy Preferred.
